What causes high blood pressure in secondary hypertension 

Secondary Hypertension and what causes it

 

Secondary hypertension is hypertension or high blood pressure caused by known factors. It normally indicates an underlying disease and secondary hypertension should always be considered especially if the patient is below 35 and if the causes normally associated with it are present and they are as follows.

 

1). Renal disease or kidney disease

             -accounts for over 80% of cases of secondary hypertension and may include conditions such as chronic glomerulonephritis, reflux nephropathy, renal artery stenosis and congenital polycystic kidneys

 

2). Coarctation of the aorta - narrowing of aorta

 

3). Endocrine disease such as Conn's syndrome, Cushing's syndrome, phaeochromocytoma and acromegaly

 

4). Pre-eclampsia which occurs in third trimester of pregnancy

 

5). Drugs which includes oestrogen containing oral contraceptives, steroids and vasopressin.
