Primary Hypertension / Essential Hypertension

 

Primary hypertension or essential hypertension refers to hypertension with no known underlying cause or causes and they contribute to 90% of all hypertensions.

 

Several factors may play an aetiological role though and they are as follows:

 

1). Genetic factors

2). High salt diet

3). Low birthweight

4). Obesity (BMI varies in different races)

5). High alcohol consumption

6). Diseases of insulin resistance such as hyperinsulinaemia, glucose intolerance, central obesity or syndrome X and low HDL cholesterol
