High Blood Pressure Causes

High Blood Pressure Causes

High blood pressure can be classified into primary pulmonary hypertension and essential hypertension. The level of blood pressure can be said to be abnormal when it is associaoted with increase in morbidity and mortality from systemic diseases such as heart disease, stroke and renal failure.  High blood pressure levels varies with age, sex, country and race.

What is high blood pressure?

The definition of high blood pressure varies but according to recent guidelines from the USA, they recommend a definition of hypertension as over 140/90 mmHg, based on at least two readings on seperate occasions.

The validity of a single blood pressure reading is unclear as blood pressure can rise in situations such as visiting the doctor or after going up a flight of stairs and several readings are normally required to confirm a diagnosis of hypertension. Sometimes ambulatory blood pressure monitoring where blood pressure is measured over a 24-hour period using a non-invasive technique is utilised if there is any doubt to the level of blood pressure.

How many types of high blood pressure causes or hypertension are there?

As mentioned above, high blood pressure can be classified into primary pulmonary hypertension or primary arterial hypertension and systemic hypertension. Systemic hypertension can be further subdivided into essential hypertension or primary hypertension and secondary hypertension. In secondary hypertension there are secondary causes that leads to high blood pressure which will be outlined in the link below.
